Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Published by flit at 4:32 pm under fiction Edit This

Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad dayI was thinking about what to write about in this blog today …. something to do with fiction …but something that doesn’t require too much brain power because I seem to be fresh out.

But somewhere along the way while I was sulking about my cruddy day today, I remembered this book. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst is just the right sort of book for me today. I’m tempted, actually, to order a copy, since I no longer seem to have one.

I was surprised to read that this book was first published in 1972!  It is definitely a classic. I remember reading it to kids at the camp I worked at, and later, to kids in residential treatment for behavioural issues when I was a Child & Youth Worker…. and of course, I read it to my own kids, as well.

Now I am thinking that I shall have to buy another copy for the grandbabies…. yeah….right…that’s a good excuse, right?

Whatever works :)

What are your favourite children’s books? The ones you think every kid should have?

I like the Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams

I also like The Velveteen Rabbit. I really enjoyed reading Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep, I Wish I Were a Butterfly and Guess How Much I Love You to my older daughter. Roxy, so far, favors If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and it’s ilk books best.

I think all Dr. Seuss are classics. I also liked the Eric Carle books (The Hungry Caterpillar).

You all have certainly taken me on a trip down memory lane! For a little bit older, Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Beverly Cleary’s Ramona Quimby series are great. But, for the primary grades, I’d have to go with Berenstein Bears and Curious George as classics.

I agree about Eric Carle. We also enjoy the Serendipity series, written by Stephen Cosgrove and illustrated by Robin James. The titles include Leo the Log, Morgan and Me, Dragolin, Flutterby, and on and on.

I love them because they have such beautiful illustrations, great stories, and a moral at the end of each. I LOVED them when I was a kid, and found about 20 of them at a garage sale for about $.50 each. What fun to rediscover them and share them with my Kiddo!
