Typing made easier

Published by flit under Ideas Edit This

Today I am working on getting one proposal and 2 short position papers written.

The proposal is for my Major Research Paper, which is titled “A Public In-Between: Fiction for Emerging Adults” - and most of it is done, but for one section which needs to describe the literary theory that I will draw on in my work. I know which resources I will be using: Michael Warrner’s Publics and Counterpublics , and (psychologist, not literary theorist) Dr. Jeffrey Arnett, and  (researcher & author not literary theorist) Don Tapcott, who wrote growing up digital and grown up digital - but I haven’t really sorted out how to actually write the section.

Then there are the 2 position papers. These are for my Viral Contagion course - some of you have already had a look at the first one I did for this course: Homeworking: Virtues of a Solitary Bird by Juan Goytisolo . My second paper will be about William Gibson’s novel, Pattern Recognition , and specifically about the fact that in this work, the disease sort of contagion (TB and HIV) are portrayed as largely contained (although it is acknowledged that they are not really) - while the contagion of commerce - brand logos, etc. run rampant in society at large and even go so far as to cause illness in Cayce, the protagonist of the story. Then I will have to come up with a topic for a third paper - no idea, at this point, what that will be, but hopefully I will think of something soon. The prof did say that one paper could relate to something we covered in our presentations rather than directly to the novels we read, so might go that route and look at viral marketing as per Bzzzagent , or flash mobs

Anyway …as I continue doing with Ross calls “tippy-typing” all day long, I am very aware - and very grateful too - of how much I appreciate some of my ~toys~. Without them, there is just no way that I would be doing the school thing and blogging and working on my children’s story for the Writers’ Union of Canada Writing for Children contest .

Evoluent upright mouse - right handedThere are a number of products which allow me to keep going in spite of the fact that both of my wrists are still damaged and weaker than they should be. I love my Evoluent mouse . A normal mouse requires that you turn your hand into what is really an unnatural position that results, according to my occupational therapist, in the bones in your arm having to cross. Which is fine, if you haven’t damaged them in an accident, or overworked them to the point of carpal tunnel syndrome - or aren’t on your computer all day every day. For those who have any sort of issues - or want to avoid any future problems - though, the Evoluent upright mouse is a great product.

While it felt a bit awkward to use at first - especially until I figured out that the right click button is - by default - the middle one, not the bottom one - it didn’t take long at all to adjust to it. You can change what each of the buttons do if you like - but for me, it was simply a matter of learning what was where. The one thing to know about this mouse is that it is not swappable - you need one for either right-handed or left-handed use.

Book holderAnother thing that the OT provided me was a book holder - which I find invaluable for when I need to type stuff from any of my texts out.   Mine is a simple wire frame thing that sits on my desk but I couldn’t find a picture of it. Anyway, I’m thinking I might upgrade to this sort, now that I have seen it - if I can figure out a way to make it work with my flexible keyboard.  From the picture, it looks as though the flex keyboard might be a problem with this one - but if I (or more accurately, hubby) can fix that, this looks like it would work even better than what I have.

flexible keyboardThe flexible keyboard is not optional. I have had mine for several years now - all of the frequently used letters have long ago worn off the keys. Good thing I took touch typing in highschool waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when or I would be totally stymied!  Aside from that minor detail, I really, really, really appreciate my keyboard these days. When I bought it, it was because it was fully washable - and since I have issues about having dirty hands I was going through more than my share of keyboards …eventually they would just get so gross that they weren’t worth cleaning any more. As an added bonus, though, the keyboard was MUCH quieter than any I had ever had - so Ross’ complaints about my tippy typing became far less of an issue. He could watch TV and I could be on the computer without the noise driving him nuts. And of course, after I wrecked my wrists (and I already had arthritis in my fingers even before then) the soft silicon keys just became all that much more important.

Thanks for Dropping By

Published by flit under Ideas Edit This

Flitting on FictionOnce again, my Top Ten Entrecard droppers list is filled with people who all have not missed a single day in the last 31… which means that we’ll have to go with the top 25 rss feed list so that I can be sure that I haven’t missed anyone….especially since March 2009 will presumably be the last time for this.

Entrecard announced the ad network thing, Today.com announced the Entrecard ban thing…. Today has since backtracked and said that we COULD leave our EC widget (sans ads) on our blogs, but any traffic coming from EC will no longer be counted in our stats and we should focus our efforts on SEO and blah blah blah.

Me, I am a tad perturbed by the whole thing… but I already had decided to remove the widget as soon as the accepted ads run out and I do believe I shall follow through with that.

Which does not mean that I won’t still be dropping by your blog regularly …I will … it will just be from flitting.org or perhaps from Just Flitting if I ever get around to doing the Entrecard thing for that site. We’ll see.

For now, thanks for dropping . … and I will get to updating my blogroll in the next day or two, by the way … just easier to do at home with better Internet and more comfortable setup :)

Just flitting

Published by flit under Ideas Edit This

flitting on fictionYAY me. Managed to post - and drop - every day this month - not on all of my blogs but on both of my today.com blogs. Hasn’t helped my traffic all that much really - but still an improvement in overall traffic from last month on both - and that has, to date, been my goal each month.

Somehow I suspect THAT particular goal is over. It is likely to take some time to get used to the loss of my Entrecard traffic. :( But I shall continue to try, anyway. And hopefully today.com won’t jump to dump me off of the PPP plan so it should still be worth trying to build non-Entrecard traffic.

Only a few more days of ads to run here - so if you haven’t yet bookmarked me please do. Also, I will be adding to my blogroll at the end of this week - my favourites and regulars and other today blogs I hope people will continue to support and. …want me to add yours? Drop a comment and I will add you too.

If you are on blogspot, you may have noticed that I’ve been joining communities on those as well. :)

Some things that will be coming up on flitting on fiction over the next while:

  • A review of Robert J. Sawyer’s new novel, WakeWake by Robert J Sawyer
  • In June I’ll be off to the U of Victoria in B.C.to learn about digital editing, followed by 2 weeks of summer school at Trent
  • July is the Leacock Festival in Orillia - something I look forward to every year. Lots of author interviews and book review opportunities.
  • And of course, as always, more flitting on fiction :)

Will be back later to fix some formatting issues. Right now am in car on the way to Peterborough. Love my Blackberry but it doesn’t work so well for formatting :)

Looking at electronic books again

Published by flit under Ideas Edit This

jetbookHubby found an article about the JetBook …. which led to yet another conversation about whether I need an electronic book :)

Of course I do!!!!

I’m an English major for crying out loud! In graduate school… and a total geek, too … there just is not that much to discuss. Obviously I read a LOT …and cart around a lot of books everywhere I go.

From there we moved onto whether my blogging money - which is all sitting in a paypal account doing nothing - should be part of the household finances….. or whether it’s money that I can use to buy myself an eReader.

Guess which side of that argument I am on?

Anyway ….although we haven’t resolved that part of it yet, have been doing some research about eReaders again.

JetBook doesn’t sound like it would do for what I want, particularly …. according to their FAQ:

It seems that jetBook does not support some e-book formats, why is that?

We are working on additional e-book format support, but at the same time we have found that 90% of free sources (Internet sources offering an almost unlimited of books) use either TXT or DOC format. Should you need any assistance finding an e-book online, please feel free to contact us and we will be glad to help you out. Our team will search, find, and send the link of that book directly to you. If you bought a jetBook, please register so you can contact us anytime with questions.

So …that won’t do…. back to looking at the Sony eReader I go …. going to have to go have a look at their website and see what they have in terms of books I would want to buy.

Many of the books I am most interested in having are actually more textbooks than popular fiction… Foucault and Warner and  Bourdieu and….. and….and….   there are bunches. And, since I’m going into the Canadian Studies program for my doctorate (still can’t believe it!!!!), I need lots of Canadian content, as well.

Which also seems to point to Sony’s eReader , since Amazon doesn’t like us Canucks!

Blackberry curveBut before I go spending my hard earned blogging money, I’m off to download the new Blackberry beta software that Fictionwise is offering. I’ve never downloaded any software to my Blackberry Curve, but seems like I’m well on my way to having an ebook application…YAY me…. now will have to go buy some books to try it with, eh?

Judge Shows

Published by flit under Ideas Edit This

Judge Milian, The People’s CourtSo …last night I managed to stay awake and get my fix of hospital shows.

And this morning I am about to embark on a day of what my hubby and kids call my stOOpid judge shows

Usually I don’t bother turning the TV on until 6 p.m. when Judge Judy comes on …she’s my favourite, although Judge Milian, of The People’s Court runs a close second. Last time I was home and able to watch TV during the day, I couldn’t find it though!!! :(  Hopefully it is back where it belongs - I haven’t checked yet.

But today, I have the house to myself, since hubby is off killing bugs for someone that I HOPE he is charging the jerk rate - dude is more than a little demanding.

Back when I used to fix computers for people I had 2 prices - one for people I liked - you know, reasonable people that didn’t expect instant service and for me to spend hours on the phone with them when I could have been fixing their computers if they would just shut the heck up and let me get to it, and the other for people that irritated me. The jerk rate was double my regular rates - you’d think that would have been enough to make them go elsewhere but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!   Anyway, this guy demanded that hubby call him “between 6:30 and 8 a.m.” …. and then when he did, even though we are NOT morning people, demanded that hubby get there to kill his bugs by 8 a.m.  Uh … not everyone lives on your street, dude! We happen to live 45+ minutes away. And since the season has not yet started, the equipment and so on is not all on the truck (it would freeze - bad) so you’ll just have to bluddy well wait, won’t you?

Anyway…. hubby’s off killing Mr. Impatient’s critters, so I have the house to myself and can turn on the TV and listen to bunches of judge shows.

If I can’t find People’s Court will have to make do with Judge Alex and Judge Mathis and Judge Joe Brown. And yep, I know these sorts of shows are not approved fodder for graduate students in English….do I care? I like ‘em :)

Dang… still no People’s Court … that bites!
